Portugal: Europe’s Friendly, Value-Packed Heaven for Solo Female Backpackers

PORTUGAL

If there’s one country I recommend again and again to solo female travelers, especially first-timers….it’s Portugal. It’s compact, ridiculously charming, safe, and honestly just easy. Things work here. People smile at you. The food doesn’t cost a kidney. And the whole place has this relaxed, almost sunny softness that makes you feel at home even before your backpack hits the hostel floor.

I’ve been to Portugal twice, and both times I ended up staying longer than planned. It’s the mix of weather, affordability, the surf culture, the dreamy old towns… and maybe the pastel de nata addiction I picked up but anyway…

The Classic “Must-See” Places

2. Porto

More soulful, more chill, and honestly more beautiful than people expect.
Highlights:

  • The Ribeira waterfront
  • Dom Luís I Bridge (yes, it’s Instagram-y but worth it)
  • Port wine cellars—most tours are very budget-friendly

4. Algarve

Beaches that look edited, but they’re real.
Top picks:

  • Lagos
  • Praia da Marinha
  • Benagil cave tour (book early)

1. Lisbon

Lisbon is one of those cities that just works for solo travel. It’s easy to walk (well, except the hills), safe, social, and full of hostels that feel like instant friendships.
Don’t miss:

  • Alfama’s maze-like alleys
  • The golden Belém Tower at sunset
  • Bairro Alto nightlife (safe-ish, but keep an eye on your drink, normal stuff)

3. Sintra

Feels like someone built Disneyland for adults.

See:

  • Pena Palace (bright yellow dream)
  • Quinta da Regaleira (mystical wells and gardens)

Best Time to Visit

April-June and September-October
Perfect weather, fewer crowds. Avoid August unless your hobby is sweating.

Safety for Solo Women

Portugal is very safe. You’ll feel it instantly.

Just remember:

  • Don’t wander down empty alleys late at night in Lisbon/Porto
  • Book hostels with good female reviews
  • Keep valuables close on crowded trams (pickpockets exist, but rarely)

That’s kind of it – Portugal is honestly one of the easiest solo destinations.

Budget Tips That Actually Work

  • Eat at local tascas (small family restaurants)
  • Get the Lisboa Card for transport + museum discounts
  • Use trains and buses—they’re clean and cheap
  • Try lunchtime menus; they’re always cheaper

I always choose Sasta Holiday to plan my vacation and I never regret my decision. You can also book your trip with them.
